![]() One of the best parts of this series has always been its focus on the ostensibly "evil" authority figures - like Rufus Sewell's John Smith, Joel de la Fuente's Kido, and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa's Tagomi - and its choice to paint them with a fine brush, bringing them to life as complex human beings and not just portraying them as cardboard cutouts. For Frank, his anger begins to drive him more and more while Joe begins to learn some interesting, and unsettling, things about his own childhood, propelling him into some big third act decisions.Ībove these ground-level players, naturally, are the men of power. Once these two settle into their Season 2 surroundings (it takes a few episodes), they flourish. For Frank, his scruffy angst leads him into dangerous plots with both the Yakuza and the Resistance and for Joe, his moping shuffles him off to Berlin where he meets his estranged father (a high-ranking Nazi officer/engineer played marvelously by Supernatural's Sebastian Roché) and a young Reich woman named Nicole (Bella Heathcote). ![]() Frank and Joe not only have issues with Juliana (even though, at a certain point, their bitterness and/or grief start to grow weary) but they have huge chips on their respective shoulders regarding their own station in life. Where does this leave the men in Juliana's life? Well, they flounder at first. ![]() Of course, I'm not going to spoil big moments here in this review, especially any part of the awesome third act, but I'll just say that stories wind up converging, and certain explanations are provided, that make Season 2 a fascinating and thrilling ride. It all feels very organic and, by the end, immensely satisfying. By the end of "The Road Less Traveled," Juliana's entire world changes and she's set on a bold, new path that helps connect - well - just about everything. It takes about two episodes before Season 2 starts taking on its own glorious shape. Juliana kicks things off by actually meeting The Man in the High Castle himself (played by Stephen Root), and that actually becomes one of the least interesting interactions she has this year. As characters who felt slightly muddled back in Season 1, and whose "love" connection never really hit home, Juliana and Joe get to go their separate ways this season and wonderfully expand. In fact, one of the biggest accomplishments this year involves the evolution of both Juliana and Joe. Hunted by both Japanese authorities and the Resistance who've now labeled her a Nazi traitor, Juliana makes some very desperate choices this season. Frank is out to somehow free Ed from prison, Joe - with multiverse film in tow - is uncomfortable being labeled a hero by the Reich, and Juliana is beset on all sides by those looking to exact revenge. Instead, we dive right into the aftermath of Season 1, now with new insights into each of our main characters. As if to say, "This is a dark and overtly morbid show so you need to figure out right now if you want to keep going." There's nothing that immediately deflating in Season 2. Perhaps I'm just remembering back to how the second episode of Season 1 dealt with the unjust execution of Frank's sister and her kids, which was an out-of-the-gate gut punch that almost acted like a litmus test for viewers. ![]() I wouldn't go so far as to say Season 2 of Amazon's The Man in the High Castle is lighter than its freshman year run, because it most certainly has its fair share of grim scenarios, but it does allow for more nuanced character moments - prioritizing them, in fact, over some of the heavy-handed world building of Season 1. ![]()

After re-watching the 8 films within days of each other, I can say that this without a doubt in the top 5 of my favorite film franchises of all time. Harry finally got to experience King's Cross Station with his family, and he honored Snape and Dumbledore with his son's name. I know some think the "19 years later" scene is hokey, but for me it's the perfect culmination of everything that the series has brought thus far. Even if you know when certain things are going to happen, they are written and presented in a way that's undeniably satisfying. Especially when watching them all back to back.Įverything about this film is epic in scale and emotion. Of course, I'm a bigger fan of Richard Harris' work as the great wizard, but Gambon's spin on the character definitely grew on me. This also gave us one final scene with Michael Gambon as Dumbledore's spirit, so to speak. Even though we ultimately knew he was going to have that showdown with Voldemort at Hogwarts, but his goodbyes to Ron and Hermione, and ultimately his discussion with The Order in the Forest, were some of the most touching scenes the franchise has given us. Harry himself goes through perhaps his biggest character arc since the middle of the franchise as he's forced to come to grips with the fact that he is the 7th horcrux after all. To watch a guy so hopelessly in love with someone he can never have, and then look after her son even though he despises the very presence of him, is so beautiful and tragic at the same time. The first time I watched this entire sequence, it absolutely broke me. This is also the film in which all was revealed about Snape and his allegiance to Harry after all. Seriously, I never would have thought Neville would be the one to kill Voldemort's snake, Nagini, but that's why it was so brilliant. Rowling has a knack for giving everyone a chance to shine, and there's no difference in Part 2. ![]() Ciaran Hinds' Abeforth Dumbledore for one, Helena Ravenclaw, a nearly-blind Dragon from Gringott's, and oh yeah those kids at the end. Sure, you can't really have the full experience without at least watching Part 1, but there's no part of me that thinks this story could have been pulled off in one film.Įven with all of the cameos and reappearances of beloved characters, there's plenty of new ones as well. Both, The Hunger Games and Hobbit series' have had a rough time closing out their series' with a film that feels whole in itself. I think what's most impressive about this particular installment is that it manages to pull off the "all pay-off" type of story that most part 2's have struggled with. We begin part 2 still in search of the Horcruxes as well as finding Voldemort's army at its strongest. The Deathly Hallows Part 2 checked off just about everything I could have asked for. To me, the perfect conclusion to a franchise ties up everything that was promised while leaving the audience with an emotionally satisfying ending that leaves the door open for something later. ![]() ![]()
![]() Hillborg: The video games were tied up as ancillary rights in a movie deal. GamesBeat: Did the rights were somehow covered in a previous agreement that expired? Or did they never really license the video game rights before? A year later, though, he contacted us and said that the rights were available at that point. But at that point the rights were still tied up. We ended up having beers in this fantastic bar at the hotel and spoke about all sorts of things. But we met Moorcock’s agent and it was a really pleasant meeting, very relaxed. You had to have an appointment to even get in the front door. I don’t know what’s happened with that, but the thing was that the stars were aligning in the autumn of 2019, because Moorcock’s agent said, “Hey, I’ll be in Stockholm next week.” He was staying at a really fancy Art Deco, 1920s-style hotel in Stockholm. In 2019 there was a big press release for another movie project from New Republic Pictures, who did 1917. Trying to cut the story short, I managed to get hold of Mike’s agent. I didn’t have a clue as to who Michael Moorcock’s agent was or anything like that. And then I thought, “Wait, we should do an Elric game.” I said that kind of half-jokingly at the time. But I had, on a mood board, Elric and Stormbringer, a painting I put there as a reference for another project. There’s no cooler fantasy IP in my opinion. Of course it wasn’t a joke that we wanted to do Elric of Melnibone. ![]() That was Wendy Pini, the artist who did the Elfquest comics back in the ‘80s. Before that there was an animated project that couldn’t get the finances together or something. The American Pie brothers, I forget their names, had a film project in 2007. Yasin Hillborg: To my knowledge, Elric of Melnibone, the license has been tied up for years, for different film projects I’d say. How did the license become available to you? Did they decide finally that video games might be a cool thing to do? I was in high school when I was reading them. GamesBeat: This is one of my favorite book series of all time from way back when. Here’s an edited transcript of our interview.Ībove: Yasin Hillborg is creative director at Runatyr. ![]() In other words, it’s a really rich universe to mine for future video games. Moorcock’s literary creations include Corum, the Dancers at the End of Time, Hawkmoon, Jerry Cornelius, Von Bek and Elric of Melniboné. This kind of multiverse, with its own Moorcock fantasy flavor, isn’t so far from the threads that shape the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the talk of the metaverse today. I love it because Moorcock’s series about Elric was just the jumping off point for a larger universe about the Eternal Champion and a “multiverse” of worlds where the doomed heroes journeyed in hopes of saving the world. The independent-focused companies hope to ship a narrative action computer game in 2024. Stockholm, Sweden-based Runatyr will work with development collective Aurora Punks and United Kingdom-based studio Upstream Arcade on the project. (Hillborg said he wasn’t yet ready to talk about the game’s art style, but he said the contributions of fans have been amazing.) Elric has also been drawn countless times. The Finnish version of Dungeons in Dragons in the 1980s had Elric’s sword, Stormbringer, on its cover. ![]() The band Blue Oyster Cult made songs about Elric. Over time, Elric has become a huge part of fantasy culture. But a year ago, he was contacted again by Moorcock’s agent, who said the rights to a game were now available. He was told at the time that the ancillary rights to the video game were tied up in a movie license that failed to come through. Hillborg said he inquired about the rights to Elric a couple of years ago after a chance conversation triggered the idea. ![]() |
